Here is a true story for you.
BOLD LITTLE LIE or SIMPLY SPEAKING MY TRUTH?
“I speak “EEK”!” my 7 year old self puffed up proudly.
The lady in admissions prompted me to share something “unique” about myself.
I was visiting a fancy uptown school in Manhattan where we lived.
Was it Dalton? I couldn’t remember.
“Really?” she answered her eyes widening while taking notes about me.
“Can you say a few words?” she asked.
A cascade of gobble dee gook flowed from my lips.
I was dead serious about my linguistic prowess.
And it was the early 80’s and there was no such thing as the internet to fact check instantaneously.
I was admitted to Dalton, but my mother chose PS 41 for me (a public school).
I later attended Friends Seminary, a private school, in 6th grade. Thank Spirit!
It was here that I had the good fortune to land in a class with a mouse named “Louis Souris.”
The teacher, Marge Gonzalez, authored a phenomenal textbook for oui ones to introduce them to a mouse who spoke French.
I was hooked.
I had landed in heaven; a place where I was invited to proclaim “à é i o û (pronounced: ah ay ee oh ew)" to my hearts desire!
Madame Gonzalez understood the absolute pure joy of making sounds that were exotic and elegant.
And so began my love affair with the French language.
